Synchronous Teaching Considerations

An online synchronous session is an online class meeting where students and faculty participate at a pre-set time in a virtual classroom (the CTE recommends the video conferencing platform Zoom), typically as part of an online course. Please see the Zoom overview section for the process of getting the Zoom Pro license.

Regardless of the context in which you develop an online synchronous session, as part of an online course or as a one-time meeting, to ensure that your synchronous sessions run smoothly, it is vital to carefully plan out how each session will proceed.

These pages will provide you with advice on how to plan a successful synchronous session, practical suggestions for running an effective synchronous session, and finally some ideas for student learning activities that utilize the strengths of video conferencing as a learning platform.
