Recording in Zoom

You may record your Zoom session so that you can share the video with others after the meeting has ended. Students may benefit from a recording of sessions if they want to review content later, have a documented accommodation, or if they cannot attend due to internet access issues or illness.

Recordings & Privacy Expectations

If you will be recording your Zoom sessions, you will want to make sure that your use of recordings complies with BC’s Classroom Recording Guidance. This includes making sure that students are made aware of the fact that classes will be recorded. If students are uncomfortable being recorded, you may want to let them know that they can turn their video and/or microphone off and encourage them to participate through other means, like the chat box. You can also record the session while in “Speaker View” and pin your own video so that students’ videos are not recorded. See more information about video layouts during recording on Zoom’s page.

According to university policy, if you plan to distribute the recording outside of the class, you will have to obtain written consent from students, and, depending on with whom you are sharing the recording, the Provost. 

Automatic Live Transcriptions 

Anyone in a Zoom meeting can now access and save an automatic transcript of the meeting. You may want to clarify your expectations for privacy with students as they relate to this feature. 

How to record a meeting

To record a meeting, click the “Record” button in the black menu bar at the bottom of your Zoom window.

The video layout when recording follows the video layout of the person that started the recording. Therefore, if you are recording a speaker and will share the recording with a wider audience, you may want to use “Speaker View.” See more information about video layouts during recording on Zoom’s Recording Layout page.

You can pause or stop the recording at any time. The recording is automatically stopped when the meeting ends.

It is very important to make sure that you let the recording file process after you end the meeting. Do not close your computer while the recording file is processing, as it may corrupt the file.

Where to find your recording

At Boston College, local recording, where the recording is stored on your computer, is the default option. You may turn on cloud recording where the recording is stored on Zoom’s servers, but cloud recordings will be deleted after 2 days.

By default, all recordings will be placed in a folder called “Zoom” which can be found in the following locations on these devices:

  • PC: C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Zoom
  • Mac: /Users/User Name/Documents/Zoom

The video file will be called “zoom_0.mp4”.

You can also open the folder where your recording is saved by going to your Zoom app, pressing “Meetings” [1], selecting the “Recorded” [2] tab, and hitting “Open” [3] for the meeting that you want to find the recording for.

Sharing your recording

Once a recording has been made, the best way to share them with your class is by uploading your recordings to Panopto so that they can be accessed from your class Canvas page. See more instructions on our page “Upload a Video on Your Computer to Panopto.”
